In France and Belgium, post boxes were already in existence, but it wasn’t until 1852 that Britain got its first post box in Jersey. Fast forward to 1853, and they were everywhere, but there was no uniform design, the only consistent feature being the slit they all had for the post.
In 1859, it was decided all boxes would be green, until people had trouble seeing where they were, so the government made them red, as most post boxes are to this day. At the same time, a standard design was issued containing the most useful features from the range that had been in use.
Surprisingly, that really is the last innovation in post boxes in the U.K., pretty amazing.
