What’s the size limit for parcels in a parcel box?

So, you’re looking at a parcel box outside your home to ensure all of your purchases are stored securely but you want to make sure you pick the correct one for the amount of parcels you get delivered, whether you have several on a regular basis or just a few more sporadically, there is a parcel box to suit your requirements.

Making sure you get the appropriate size parcel box is crucial to ensure you can safely store all of your parcels being delivered. It’s worth noting that we will be looking at the sturdier of parcels, such as boxes which are rigid and don’t have any give to them when being placed into the parcel box, items such as clothing often come in packaging which makes them easier to store away.

What sizes does a parcel box come in?

At Brizebox, our standalone and built-in parcel boxes come in three different sizes:

  • Standard Parcel Box
  • Large Parcel Box
  • Extra-Large Parcel Box

We also have our Apartment parcel lockers which come in two different sizes:

  • Standard Parcel Box
  • Large Parcel Box

The parcel box sizes will vary for their physical overall dimensions, knowing how much space they will take up once installed is important, and then obviously, the bigger the parcel box, the more parcels can fit into it. Below are the physical dimensions for the overall size for each variation.

  • Standard Parcel Box – 57.5cm high x 39cm wide x 32.5cm deep
  • Large Parcel Box – 85cm high x 50xcm wide x 32.5cm deep
  • Extra-Large Parcel Box – 115cm high x 60cm wide x 48cm deep

Ensuring you choose the right size parcel box will depend on how many people live at the place of residence it is being installed, how frequently you get deliveries and also what those deliveries specifically are.

What sizes are the letterbox on the parcel box variations

Before we get to how many parcels can fit into each one, it is worth noting that each parcel box comes with a standard letterbox at the top for all of your standard mail to be stored as well as parcels, and these are different sizes depending on which parcel box you require and choose.

  • Standard Parcel Box Letterbox Size – 250mm x 40mm
  • Large Parcel Box Letterbox Size – 300mm x 40mm
  • Extra-Large Parcel Box Letterbox Size – 350mm x 40mm

To put these into perspective, the Royal Mail classifies a letter as 240mm in length, so a normal letter will fit in all three of the above, however a large letter is classed as 350mm in length, so it will only fit an Extra-Large Parcel Box. This is good to know when looking at the size of your parcel box in case you are looking to have it store any large letters as well as parcels.

What size parcels can fit into the parcel boxes?

You’ve got all of your letters stored away nicely, but now to the larger goods, what size parcels can fit into each of the parcel boxes. Before we get into the max sizes of parcels for each model, it’s worth noting what Royal Mail classes parcel sizes at.

  • A small parcel has max dimensions of 35.3cm in length, 35cm in width and 16cm thickness, with a max weight of 2kg.
  • A medium parcel has max dimensions of 61cm in length, 46cm in width and 46cm thickness, with a max weight of 20kg.

Now we can look at the max size of parcels that will fit into each of the parcel box sizes.

A standard parcel box will accommodate parcels up to 32cm wide, 23cm deep and 18cm high. This means that compared to what a small parcel is classed as by Royal Mail, most small parcels will fit fine, there’s a 3.3cm overlap in length meaning a few of the parcels at the larger end of the scale will struggle to fit.

A large parcel box will accommodate parcels up to 43cm wide, 22cm deep and 31cm high. This means that vs the standard parcel box, you get an extra 11cm in width and 13cm in height for parcel sizes that will fit the large parcel box vs the standard parcel box.

An extra large parcel box will accommodate parcels up to 52cm wide, 39cm deep and 32cm high. This is a big increase on what fits into a standard parcel box, an extra 20cm in width which is an increase of 62.5%, 16cm in depth and 14cm in height. When compared to the large parcel box, you get an extra 9cm in width, 17cm in depth and a slight increase of 1cm in height with the extra-large parcel box.

Each parcel box will take multiple parcels until it’s full, however the amount your selected size will be able to store is going to vary depending on the size of each parcel inserted.
